Blends ~n~ Uses

" The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them." Ecclesiaticus 38:4

WOW---
Where do we start? There are so many uses for essential oils. You can use them to scent rooms, perfume your body, inhalations, compress's and ease your spirit.

This is a new site and to begin I will give you just a short list of do's and don'ts to help you learn a little bit of what you need to know about choosing and using your oils. I will give you a few common tips on uses of essential oils and then I will give you some blends that you can create yourself.

My goal for these pages is to create an atmosphere of information dealing with specific oils, uses and conditions. Some months may be just a specific oil, ailment or use. Or there may be a variety of topics covered. For example, this month...it's pretty much a grab bag, a little bit of everything. A potpourri of information...speaking of potpourri...

Potpourri which has lost its scent can be revived by adding a few drops of essential oil!

For Scent-Sational smelling towels, sheets, clothes, etc. place a few drops of your favorite oil onto a small piece of terry cloth and toss into the dryer with your clothes. Add 5 drops essential oil to 1/4-cup fabric softener or water and place in the center cup of your washer.

Add essential oils to paper mache, the result is the creation of a lovely aromatic art piece.

Infuse bookmarks and stationary with essential oils. Place drops of oil on paper and put them in a plastic bag. Seal it and leave overnight to infuse the aroma.

Mice...yuck...Place several drops of Peppermint oil on cotton balls and place them at problem locations.

To dispel household cooking odors, add a few drops of Clove oil to a simmering pan on the stove.

Flies and moths dislike Lavender oil. Sprinkle it on the outside of your window frames.

Essential oils of Vetivert, Cypress, Atlas Cedarwood, Frankincense and Myrrh all make wonderful firewood oils. Drop approximately 2-3 drops of oil or blend of your choice on a dried log and allow time for the oil to soak in before
putting the log on the fire.

1 drop of Lemon essential oil on a soft cloth will polish copper with gentle buffing.

Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in your vacuum cleaner bag. Lemon and Pine are nice. Rose & Geranium helps with doggy odor.... And speaking of dogs...

Make a natural flea collar, saturate a short piece of cord or soft rope with Pennyroyal or Tea Tree oil. Roll up in a handkerchief and tie loosely around the animal's neck...and your Pooch will be "styling." Might as well put another little "doggy" or pet use here. Add 10 drops of essential oil to a box of cornstarch or baking soda, mix very well, let set for a day or two and then sprinkle over your carpets. Leave it for an hour or more, then vacuum.

When moving into a new home, first use a water spray containing your favorite essential oils and change the scent of the "house"...into the scent of your "home".

When washing out the fridge, freezer, or oven, add 2 drop of Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Mandarin, or Orange essential oil to the final rinse water.

The blend of Lavender and Grapefruit oil is good for the office. Lavender creates a calm tranquil atmosphere while Grapefruit stimulates the senses and clears up stale air.

One drop on a cool light bulb will scent the air when the bulb is lit.

To create a scented candle in your favorite scent, place a drop or two of oil into the hot melted wax as the candle burns. DO NOT PUT OIL NEAR THE FLAME.

Homemade sachets are more fragrant when essential oils are blended with the flowers and herbs

The bathroom is easily scented by placing oil - scented cotton balls inconspicuous places or sprinkle oils directly onto silk or dried flower arrangements or wreaths.

Smelly feet or shoes...of course not us. But you can share this with a friend. This can be remedied by either dropping a few drops of Geranium essential oil directly into the shoes or by placing a cotton ball dabbed with a few drops of Lemon oil into the shoes. Athlete's foot? Tea -tree is great!

Overindulge last night? Well, it serves you right.... Sorry, my bad self is showing. Ok...Essential oils of Juniper, Cedarwood, Grapefruit, Lavender, Carrot, Fennel, Rosemary and Lemon help soften the effects of a hangover. Make your own blend of these oils and use a total of 6-8 drops in a bath.

Neck pillows, padded and decorative hangers make more memorable gifts simply by putting a couple of drops of essential oil on them before giving.

Fishermen have used anise oil for years. Use a drop or two on the fingertips and hands before baiting up. Anise covers up the human scent that scares the fish away.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances and as such should be treated with respect. The following guidelines are important:

Never use undiluted essential oils on the skin, unless you are professionaly advised
to do so.  (except Lavender and Tea Tree)
Keep out of reach of children and away from eyes.
Never take oils internally.
Keep undiluted oils stored in glass bottles.

Dilution Ratios

Massage Oil

Blend essential oils with a carrier or fixed oil, such as sweet almond or grapeseed oil, and use a ratio of 10 drops essential oil to every ounce of carrier oil or a 3% ratio.
When blending a facial treatment, never use more than a 1.5% dilution ratio.

Perfume Body Oil

Mix 4 teaspoons of jojoba or coconut oil with 10-15 drops of essential oil. Fill bottle with carrier oil and then add the essential oil/oils drop by drop, shaking and testing as you go, until you get the right fragrance. If kept tightly capped, in a cool place for a week or so, the blend will settle, releasing some of its high notes, and will improve.

To preserve a massage or body oil mixtures, add a few capsules of vitamin E or Jojoba oil.
Essential oils and fixed oils can go rancid, store them in the refrigerator to help preserve them.
